It's Mothers Day weekend in Berkeley Springs and that means Plant Sale, busy restaurants and this year, a play opening at the Ice House.

Let's start with the Master Gardeners annual Plant Sale in Berkeley Springs State Park in the heart of town. You can't miss it and wouldn't want to. Friday from 9 to 6 and Saturday from 9 to 4. Along with the Plant Sale -- same days, same hours -- you can self-tour some marvelous local gardens. There are a half dozen both public and private with treasures ranging from a doll house on George Washington's original lots to several with fountains and pools.

Next on the agenda is Opening Night on Friday at 7:30pm of "Big Sur," a contemporary comedy that takes us on a road trip across country and a series of hilarious encounters along the way. Playwright Frank Gagliano is in attendance on opening night to chat with the audience. Also shows at 7:30 Saturday night and 3pm Sunday afternoon -- plus next weekend. Staged at the Ice House. Speaking of the Ice House, make certain a stop during the day on Friday, Saturday or Sunday is on your list to see the annual Quilt Show and Sale. Hours are 11am to 5pm.

Nightlife is filled with music starting on Friday at Earth Dog Cafe with the All Ages Show featuring Ignite the Borealis and special guests, The Black Cat School of Rock. On Saturday, Earth Dog features the retro band The Flashbacks. At the Fairfax Coffee House it's Dana and Susan Robinson performing original contemporary songs and traditional Appalachian music on Friday at 8pm while on Saturday, crowd favorite, Billy Bridger presents his musical impressions show. Ambrae House uses its alluring outdoor deck on Friday and Saturday from 7-10pm for live music.

The Star Theatre goes for laughs this weekend. Bring Mom to see the new Farrelly Brothers version of "The Three Stooges." She'll love the Stooges as babies. That's Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8pm.

Everyone takes Mom out to eat on Sunday so get reservations early -- and choose additional mornings, afternoons and evenings to celebrate. Lot 12, Tari's Cafe, Panorama at the Peak -- all are top of the line fantasy choices for Mom. Along with their fabulous food, Lot 12 is giving a locally grown plant to all mom's on Mothers Day. Panorama has brunch from 11-1 featuring Crabby asparagus crepes then Larry Bish performs from 1-4pm and dinner continues through 6pm. The Country Inn stages a special Mothers Day Brunch Buffet on Sunday from noon to 4pm with special entertainment. Cacapon State Park also has a Mothers Day Buffet from noon to 6pm on Sunday featuring everything from seafood newburg to roast chicken. Tari's Cafe is serving their new spring dinner menu from 11am-8pm. Temptations Cafe chose special Mother's Day brunch ( 8:30am to 1:30pm) and dinner (2-9pm) menus for Sunday to compliment their usual Fresh Fish Frenzy on Friday and Steak Night on Saturday. Plenty of fine eateries get added to the list including Angus and Ale and Mountainside south of town. Then there is the ultimate place to take Mom -- Maria's Garden, devoted to Mary, the most famous mother of all. Make sure you see the Marian Museum while you are there. Try sweet treats at Temptations Too where they cupcake of the day is sour cream coconut or Reese'! s peanut butter, and donuts on demand at Lighthouse Latte (right across the corner from the Quilt Show -- how perfect is that!) For a mid afternoon snack stop at Creekside Creamery for an ice cream and a free beverage.

Let's not forget shopping -- for or with Mom. Bring Mom to Nature Niche with "proof of motherhood" (that can be you) and they'll offer her a 25% discount on any item of their choice. They accept caring for four legged animals and other creatures as motherhood as well as the more traditional definition. Other fine shops include a pair of antique malls and smaller shops for collectibles, local and regional art at several locations including Mountain Laurel, Lions Lair, Heath Gallery (where you'll see witty paintings of all sorts of mothers) and the Ice House Co-op Gallery. Combine wine and art at the Wilkes Street Wine Shop on Saturday where AnayaArt Stu dio is having a show opening with artist Robert Howard and Janet Gauthier. The Vintage Kitchen is having a Mother's Day sale on Friday and Saturday. Make something yourself for mother by joining the fused glass class at Frog Valley Saturday 2-4pm. Don't leave without a piece of Berkeley Springs branded on everything from magnets to t-shirts at the new Berkeley Springs Memories -- or some edible local produce at the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market on Sunday from 10am to 2pm.

What better way to treat Mom this weekend than getting her some spa treatments whether it's Spa for a Day at Atasia with its fabulous facials and massages or more massages and skin treatments at Bath House Day Spa or specialty treatments at Awakening Health Center, Berkeley Springs Acupuncture and Able Body Wellness. Berkeley Springs State Park has offerings that include the historic Roman Baths as well as steams, saunas and massage. Spa packages are available at the Country Inn which is now featuring acupuncture, and upgrade combinations with aromatherapy, cupping, shiatsu and tai nu. We want our visiting Moms to go home more beautiful and rested than they ever imagined.
